Simulation of drop breakup

when fuel is sprayed in engine, jet primary and secondary breakup happen and tiny droplets are formed. The performance of  fuel spray in engine depends on the size of these droplets.

Simulation of single drop breakup using interFoam

Here the mechanism of single droplet breakup is shown when air is crossing over it. The simulation is done with interFoam on two-dimensional axisymmetric  grid where refined near droplet. The grid and initial shape of droplet are displayed below:

axisymmetric (wedge type) grid with local refinement is created with OpenFOAM utilities

In order to create above grid following utilities are used:

  • blockMesh
  • topoSet
  • refineHexMesh
  • extrudeMesh

initial drop in computational domain is placed with setField.  The air flow velocity is around Mach number 0.1.  The droplet evolution is shown below:
