when fuel is sprayed in the engine, jet primary and secondary breakup happen and tiny droplets are formed. The performance of fuel spray in an engine depends on the size of these droplets.

Simulation of single drop breakup using interFoam

Here the mechanism of single droplet breakup is shown when air is crossing over it. The simulation is done with interFoam on a two-dimensional axisymmetric grid where refined near droplet. The grid and initial shape of the droplet are displayed below:

In order to create the above grid following utilities are used:

  • blockMesh
  • topoSet
  • refineHexMesh
  • extrudeMesh

the initial drop in computational domain is placed with setField.  The airflow velocity is around Mach number 0.1.  The droplet evolution is shown below:
